Node 4 provides support and services to the whole SPICOSA community, in particular model support, internal and external information management, and an assessment of alternative strategies for Integrated Coastal Zone Management.

Four work packages take part of this node, as follows:

Node 1 Science & Policy Interface Methodology

Node 2 System Approach Framework Methodology

Node 3 Study Sites Activities

Node 4 Support and Services

Node 5 Knowledge Transfer

Work Package 8: Model Support aims to facilitate the use and adaptation of existing models for the SSAs, provide quality assurance, and support in model simulation and implementation. It also assist with the adaptation and coupling of spatial models to the SAF simulation software, and finally contributes to establish a model library of Model Building Blocks (MBBs) and other models that can be easily adapted to the SAF, and provide documentation for these models.

Work Package 9: SAF Information Management Plan is dedicated to develop and improve the Information Management Plan for observational data, model outputs, and for all other relevant information generated and gathered during and beyond the projects’s life-time. It implies to make historical and modern European data sets available and archive scientific information as delivered and/or required by the SSAs. Thus ensure that data and information are properly secured, preserved and treated according to international standards and protocols. Finally, to develop, implement and adapt according to the needs a user-friendly, electronic portal/gateway for online access to SPICOSA data and information.

Work Package 10: Alternative Strategies is dedicated to evaluate global ICZM policy experiences and references, classify them based on their relevance to Sustainable Development for EU CZs, as well as to develop and assess Technical Options, which mitigate the harms, that appeared as direct and indirect consequences of human activities; and finally investigate technical advances that could provide cost-effective alternatives for sustainable ICZM and make a relevant set available to SPICOSA and the ICZM researchers and practitioners. In order to achieve this, WP10 findings will be made available at the SPICOSA/Coastal WIKI. Furthermore, in response to data gaps revealed in the SSAs, this WP also evaluates observational monitoring strategies to sustain continued simulations of dynamic indicators relevant to sustainable use of the coastal zones.

Work Package 11: Communication and dissemination aim at informing relevant policy makers, related EU project teams and policy initiatives, the broader coastal community, and the public about the concepts, progress, and results of SPICOSA in a way that is easy to understand and relevant to them. One of the most effective tools is this public website – as it acts as the dissemination channel for the various communications tools developed by the project. In this portal which is being updated regularly, various project related sections have been developed, such as the SETNet – Education & Training network, the SPICOSA e-newsletters and flash news, a ‘Live” section – a series of podcasts (video files) presenting project partners views, experiences in a modern and quick way. The SPICOSA dissemination activities have already reached more than 6000 individuals throughout Europe and at the occasion of various local/regional events as well as international conferences.
